Brands, much like people, sometimes need to change their ways: there comes a point in life (and in marketing) when a reset is needed to stave off stagnation and pave the way for a new phase of success.
But how do you know if it’s the right time to rebrand your business, or simply a case of itchy feet? And how do you know if the rewards will outweigh the risks?
In this whitepaper, we explore the scenarios that form a legitimate case for change, so you can move forward with the clarity and conviction that’s needed to pull it off successfully.
If you time it to perfection, it can catalyse a strong business transformation, inspiring audiences, revolutionising revenue and getting every employee excited about who you are and where you’re headed. (Much like our beautiful work for the B2B façade brand, Fairview. More on this below.)
Many businesses eventually graduate from one phase of maturity to another (e.g. from mid-sized player to industry leader). During these transitions, your current brand might start to feel out of date, lacking the sophistication and credibility that defines the scale of your operations today.
What’s more, your brand may even fall short of the polish and ambition that bigger clients and investors expect, resulting in missed opportunities and stunted success. Just as we tend to retire the clothes we wore as teenagers (RIP, ripped jeans), brands also need to sharpen up their look when entering a more mature chapter in life.
You might have started out with one hero product or service. But as your business has grown, it’s moved into more products, more services and more markets. Each new business area sends out a different message to customers, making it harder for them to understand (let alone remember) what your company does as a whole.
In this situation, a rebrand can sum up the full value of what you now do, distilling your benefit into a simple but powerful proposition. You may also need to revisit your brand architecture, ordering a sprawling collection of products into something structured that any new customer can understand. Think of it as good housekeeping for your (many) business lines.

As unsettling as it can be, your target audience won’t stay static. The market that surrounds your business is fluid: new cohorts will stumble on your products, and even existing customers’ attitudes change over time.
If your current brand is no longer resonating with your audiences, you might need to adjust your voice, message or image so it meets their worldview. Otherwise, they’ll simply move on to a competitor who speaks their language with more fluency and flair.
Culture moves at the speed of a scroll. And what felt fresh ten years ago may feel old-fashioned today. This is particularly relevant if you’re in a sector where innovation is vital, such as science, technology or logistics.
But in truth, no business can afford to look behind the times, and clients always want to engage with companies that are using the latest thinking to help them succeed. Rebranding is a surefire way to bring your identity up to speed, increasing your relevance and competitiveness in one move.
Sometimes, your brand may not be going through any of these specific issues. But for reasons that are difficult to define, your marketing isn’t converting at the level you’d like.
There’s a well-documented link between brand strength and overall business performance (as discussed in our previous whitepaper), so looking underneath the bonnet of your brand can make all the difference. Perhaps your UVP isn’t quite right, or you’re not cutting through in a competitive market.
Whatever the reason, a rebrand can disentangle the issue and unblock the growth you’ve been striving for.

Any of the scenarios above feeling familiar? Before you make any radical changes, it’s important to step back and think carefully about what the new brand needs to achieve.
At TOAST, we believe every rebrand should be:
In fact, we strongly recommend speaking to an experienced consultant who’s been there and done this many times as a first port of call.
They’ll offer rigorous analysis of the state play, cut through the complexity of the issue, and provide a clear-eyed, external perspective on what you’re really up against. And as always, the more time you invest in understanding your brand problems, the better the final result will be.

REBRANDING FAIRVIEW ARCHITECTURE (TWICE)
When Fairview first approached us back in 2015, they’d acquired an impressive reputation for their dedication to safety, quality and customer satisfaction. But while their reputation had grown, their brand had stayed the same. Our task was to bring the brand in line with the business and set the stage for the next phase of Fairview’s evolution.
We developed a new look and feel that doubled down on the premium presence they were known for: clear-cut, interlocking lines spoke to the meticulous craft of their façades, while the entire visual identity seamlessly integrated tradition with innovation, enhancing trust with the architects, builders and installers they wanted to influence.
By harmonising every brand element, we created a cohesive narrative that reinforced Fairview's position as a leading industry leader.

This positioning laid a strong foundation for success. But ten years later, their product portfolio had expanded across a range of materials and building types (especially residential). With their offering significantly enhanced, they needed to refresh their brand so it captured the collective value of their beautiful new façades.
Our deep immersion in the brand via qualitative interviews, quantitative surveys and stakeholder engagement unearthed a twin truth about these products. Their façades didn’t just work on a practical level, they were aesthetically inspiring, too. Looking beautiful and working beautifully all the way through. Not only was this a unique proposition in a cluttered category, it played well with their target audience: as professionals who span both design and construction performance, architects ultimately want to choose a façade that delivers on both levels.

Drawing inspiration from the F and V of Fairview, we then gave them a new tagline, “Vision & Function”, reinforcing the association in customers’ minds across every touchpoint. We also built out a manifesto, methodology and messaging system that fully articulated this idea, detailing all the ways in which they deliver design and performance, from stunning textures to sturdy materials.
A powerful (and eye-catching proposition) that brought together style and substance under one roof.

If you’re considering a brand transformation, we have the experience to help you navigate it. We take a rigorous, research-led approach to every engagement, crafting a strategy that’s grounded in a deep understanding of the problem you want to solve. We’ll help you overcome it, augmenting the entire business with more clarity, more structure and more success.
Ready. Set. Rebrand.
